The founder of the institution was Pandit Narayan Moreshwar Khare, a faithful disciple of Pandit Vishnu Digambar Paluskar. Pandit Khare was a simple and pious man and also a learned musician. He was brought to Sabarmati Ashram by Mahatma Gandhi. Khareji conducted the prayer meetings at the Sabarmati ashram and nurtured devotional songs of different languages, giving them a classical touch. The collection of these songs became popular as Ashram bhajanavali. We see Khareji in the famous photograph of Dandi march with an ektara in his hands, walking besides Gandhiji.


An able disciple of Pandit Narayan Moreshwar Khare, Ravji bhai successfully coordinated the activities of Gandharva Mahavidyalaya for 58 years, and also founded Bruhad Gujarat Sangeet Samiti (B.G.S.S.) – the examination board for conducting music exams in Gujarat in 1957.

Acharya Shree Ravji bhai was a self made man who did pioneering work in the field of classical music in Gujarat. He was born in 1911 at Vasad, Gujarat and studied at Gujarat Vidyapeeth where he met his Guru Pt. Narayan Moreshwar Khare. He not only imbibed the finer nuances of music from him but also became a true Gandhian. He wore khadi all his life and followed Gandhian principles. After Pandit Khare’s demise in 1938, he groomed himself through intense learning process by listening to stalwarts of classical music in person or on radio. He achieved the status of a good singer and also passed ‘Sangeet Praveen’ – the highest exam in Hindustani classical music. He adopted Kirana style and his Alap of different Ragas were really worth listening. He was a very good teacher also but spreading classical music in Gujarat was his main mission in life. He traveled throughout Gujarat and united music teachers as well as music lovers. He also arranged programmes in public places like gardens etc. and invited national artists to perform. Continuously for 15 years, he gave lessons on classical music on All India radio.

As the founder of Bruhad Gujarat Sangeet Samiti, he was the main force behind standardizing the courses for music exams of vocal, instrumental and dance, starting from first year to the post-graduate and doctoral level. He also wrote series of books: ‘Raga darshan’ - part 1 to 7 and prepared educational tapes explaining different ragas for the benefit of students. Compilation of Aadivasi folk songs along with their notations also goes to his credit.

Government of Gujarat awarded him with ‘Gaurav Puraskar’ for his contribution to the field of classical music. Many organizations from Gujarat and outside felicitated him with ‘Maanpatras’ and other honors.
Leaving the reigns of the institution in the hands of his students, he passed away on 5th November, 2005.


Born in 1916, Pranlal bhai was a disciple of Pt. Vinayakrao Patwardhan. He was a violinist and also a vocalist. He was a strict disciplinarian and a true Gandhian. He taught vocal as well as violin in Gandharva Mahavidyalaya and served the institute for about 57 years with utmost sincerity. He supported Acharya Shree Ravjibhai in all the activities of the institute. He also founded Gujarat Sangeet Shikshak Sangh and fought for the benefit of music teachers. He wrote the book ‘Saral Sangeet Shashtra’ explaining the basics of classical music in a very lucid language. Leading a simple and pious life, he passed away on 10th September, 2000.


A well known sitar player of Gujarat and a disciple of Late Pt. Nikhil Banerjee, he is fondly known as Jhala Saheb. He had his initial training in vocal music under Shree Ravji bhai, and he always stood by him in all the activities of the institute. He taught sitar for nearly 55 years in Gandharva Mahavidyalaya and strengthened the instrumental section of the institute. Recipient of ‘Gaurav Puraskar’, he did a pioneering work in the field of Sitarvadan in Ahmedabad. He also organized concerts of music for many years under the banner of ‘SurSingar’


Shree Kantilal Aarya, Shree Natwarlal Parikh, Shree Ramsevak Pandey, Shree Shantilal Bhavsar and Peon Tukaram along with the above mentioned Gurus, were the core team members who gave selfless dedicated service for years together and laid a strong foundation for the institute.

President Smt. Prabhaben Chinubhai and freedom fighter Shree Suryakant Parikh, who served as honorary secretary for 33 years, also were instrumental in the progress of the institute. During this period, the institution got public and eminent persons of the society like Shree Jaykrushna Harivallabhdas, Sheth Shree kantilal Manilal, Dr. Biharibhai Kanaiyalal, Justice Praful Bhagvati etc. took interest in its working & also were a part of the advisory board of the institute.

Shree Babubhai was a scholarly musician and Ravji bhai’s right hand in Bhruhad Gujarat Sangeet Samiti. He presided over the Samiti for 43 years as Mahamantri and played a very important role in its development.

Born in 1919 at Bhavnagar, Gujarat, Babu bhai had inherited a melodious voice from his father Govindji, who was also his Guru. After his initial training under him, Babubhai completed ‘Sangeet Alankar’ under the able guidance of Proffesor B. R. Deodhar. Impressed by the gayaki of Ustad Wahid Khan Saheb of Kirana gharana, he moulded his gayaki accordingly. He gave classical recitals on All India Radio for about 50 years and was also known for his educational programmes on radio.

He had great knowledge of mishra as well as rare ragas, and was considered a human encyclopedia of raga music. Babu bhai was a good composer and has composed bandishes mainly in aprachalit ragas. His younger brother and disciple Shree Rasiklal Andhariya rose to the level of national artist.

Babubhai was awarded with many awards including the ‘Gaurav Puraskar’ from the state. He left for heavenly abode on 18th November 2000.
