Gandharva Mahavidyalaya is one of the oldest government recognized classical music teaching institutions of Gujarat. It was started in 1935 with the aim of creating awareness about classical music in people at large in order to preserve and spread our cultural heritage. Making accessible, the training in vocal and instrumental classical music to common people and help them learn as well as enjoy it, was the main purpose behind setting up the institution. Bruhad Gujarat Sangeet Samiti was founded in 1957 as a part of the institute for conducting music exam. The institution was tranformed in to Gandharva Mahavidyalaya Trust in 2000.
Today Gandharva Mahavidyalaya Trust, Ahmedabad is like a mini-university, engaged in twofold activities namely music teaching as well as conducting exams in classical music all over Gujarat, with many music schools of the state affiliated to it. At present, training in classical music in Vocal, Harmonium and Tabla is imparted in Gandharva Mahavidyalaya, the music school. Also exams in Classical Music (Vocal, Instrumental & Dance) are conducted by Bruhad Gujarat Sangeet Samiti.
